The Strong Calm Man

“The strong calm man is always loved and revered. He is like a shade-giving tree in a thirsty land or a sheltering rock in a storm. .. The calm man, having learned how to govern himself, knows how to adapt himself to others; and they, in turn, reverence his spiritual strength and feel that they can learn of him and rely upon him. …The more tranquil a man becomes, the greater is his success, his influence, his power for good. ..” -James Allen

“A man becomes calm in the measure that he understands himself as a thought-evolved being, for such knowledge necessitates the understanding of others as the result of thought and as he develops a right understanding and sees more and more clearly the internal relations of things by the actions of cause and effect, he ceases to fuss and fume and worry and grieve and remains poised, steadfast and serene.” -James Allen

“Only the wise man, only he whose thoughts are controlled and purified, makes the winds and the storms of the soul obey him.” -James Allen

I don’t know the answers…

I don’t believe art is created for commercial purposes. I believe it is created because there are those sensitive souls that must transmute the poisons of an insane world. what most choose to deny and supress must pop out somewhere…only so much dirt can be held beneath the carpet of life… generations hold or process what the prior ones could not… moving toward clean air for everyone is the goal but the mud is thick and hard in places where the soul refuses to go…so the artist must take his sculpting pen and carve away the old.. so in time the river of life will flow without the blood of sin…once again…and we will know… we were all born to love and be loved..yet that is so hard to do. saying yes to life and all the beauty shining through…we often feel unworthy of goodness when it comes… but all the pain has its reasons …to make us grow toward the sun. -shannan suzzette

being old
(c) 2011 shannan suzzette

when we are young
we seek the great power of passion
when we are old
we seek the simple power of trust
when we are young
we believe we have all the time
in the world
to build our dreams
and live our fantasies
when we are old
time is not what it seemed
and we are left with pieces of things
we never had time
to put together
we are left with holes
we never filled
we are left with
many things undone
but if we can remember this
one love who made time move slowly
we will have something
really important to hold
when we are old
and we will know
being young was a good thing
but being old is so much better

comfort is keeping it simple.

comfort is keeping it simple. with all this crazy power-hacking power-tripping peopled world, I am really glad I have opted for a small simple life. age is really a good thing when you are happy in your own skin. it takes so much energy to worry about having power. I’m happy just being a little lantern with a good pen and a moleskin. writers are simple that way. comfort in the quiet life. that’s power enough for me. -shannan suzzette

Saving a Fish

Saving a Fish
(c) 2011 shannan suzzette taylor

my dog passed by the pond today on our morning walk and she stopped at the edge, leaning over the water as if to hear better. I pulled her away and back to the matter at hand, her potty and walk time. but as we rounded the corner near the pond on our return home, she went to the edge of the pond again and would not leave. as I stared at the water, I saw some young fish flipping around in a circle of rocks where my dog was looking intensely, it was almost like the little fish were mating or even eating on each other. it was strange and as I stood there it began to feel troubling. so I went to get a long stick to move the little fish along and out of the rock circle and as I did I saw another fish tail in the muddy water with its head down like it was stuck…or dead. so I poked around it to try to flip it up and eventually it flipped up and onto a rock like a pop tart completely breathless and gasping for air. it was a very big white fish that was stuck in the mud and was dying. I think the little red fish were trying to pull it out. that is what all the commotion was about, a big fish that got caught between a rock and hard place face down in the mud and it couldn’t move and the little fish were trying desperately to save it. and, thankfully, my dog had heard what I did not…I did not hear or listen for the sound of a dying fish calling for help.

I suppose the lesson of the day then is that my inner senses need to be tuned to the inaudible sounds of someone crying for help. it’s not that we need to do alot to help other people other than hear them cry for help and maybe get a stick and flip them up out of the mud so they can breath and swim again. maybe we need to be more like animals and learn to hear with our heart.

“It takes great courage to stand up for something, because the moment you decide you want to do good in this world, you are chased by forces looking to stop you. At any cost.
Be brave in the face of criticism and opposition. Follow your heart, you’ll never get lost, and you will prevail.” -Yehuda Berg
